Tell me about Smart Wiring

Welcome to the introduction of Smart wiring.

It's not what we do but it's worth mentioning - especially if you're building a home. Here we'll discuss what it is, how it works and how you'll connect using smart wiring?

Some homes in New Zealand will be smart wired that connecting to the internet without all the necessary cables and chords that can be littered all over the place is made much easier. No need for the long 3m extension cords running along your hallway or dining room just to connect to the internet in another room but in (non-technical terms) a panel in the wall connected to every room in the house through internal wiring.

It will save a lot of time and effort connecting to the internet and setting up your router. The smart wiring is normally installed in your Garage or your hallway.

Not only can it be installed or used and connected to the internet, but other communications such as SKY/TV, Home phone, lighting, security, home entertainment, etc.

Below shows a diagram of what smart (star wiring) looks like in your home kind of like a switchboard.

How does it work?

It works just like you would plug your modem into the ONT but instead plugging into the port on the smart wiring panel.

Just imagine the ONT -> Smart wiring panel -> Router

A great reason to have smart wiring is this: Let's say your ONT is installed in the Garage and your main room you will use in is the lounge which is all the way at the other end of the house. Sometimes the wireless signal is not strong enough to reach so either use an ethernet cable to connect properly orjust deal with the signal not reaching and spend most your time in the hallway or a room closes to it!  But with smart wiring installed this will act as an ethernet cable in this instance through the wall to a port so it makes connection easier and closer for that signal to reach.
